Smoking on the Street
The New York Times ^ | October 25, 2002 | DAVID A. HOLTZMAN

Posted on 10/25/2002 2:08:07 AM PDT by sarcasm

To the Editor:

An Oct. 22 letter ("A Middle Ground on Smokers' Rights") proclaims that tobacco smoke should not be allowed to "escape into the public domain." That would include the air we breathe on public sidewalks, wouldn't it?

When I was a government scientist in air pollution health risk assessment, the leading experts in the measurement and health effects of tobacco smoke told me that proper studies would probably show adverse health effects from sidewalk exposure to tobacco smoke. I know that it sickens me.

If New York's mayor, Michael R. Bloomberg, is truly more interested in protecting people from tobacco smoke than he is in the revenue from tobacco taxes, he will take his crusade against smoking to the streets.

God forbid, while walking down the streets of NY, as 6 busses and 14 taxis pass you by, that you should inhale the smoke from a teaspoon of smoldering leaves.

I like to tick the smoking nazis off by always having an >unlit< pipe in my mouth in non-smoking areas.

They make faces and some even confront me to which I act confused, put the pipe in their face and say..."But...it isn't lit...wanna see?"

Gets em jumping ugly! hehehehehe!

In some ways I hope they follow through with this thinking so I can become a NY cabbie and make a fortune selling untaxed Mafia butts out of the trunk of my cab.

"Twice around the block, cabbie, and let me have one of those $25 packs of Marlboros would ya?"

Looking at obese people walking down the street offends me. I suggest a ban on anyone not meeting the government overweight standards be banned from the public sidewalk. >sarcasm<
